National Anti-Corruption Committee starts Operations
The National Committee set up to lead the fight against organized theft and corruption has begun operations, its officials said on Friday.
The officials said the Committee’s initial anti-corruption activities are targeting six sectors – land and public housing management; security and justice; financial sector; government revenue and customs system; service delivery; administration and government procurement.
The committee said the anti-corruption push has already begun based on a recently concocted investigation into corruption cases.
Accordingly, Tewodros Bekele, the Director General of the Financial Security Service (FSS), has been arrested in connection with a corruption case.
Several other officials from FSS, the Information Network Administration, National Security Service, police, prosecutors, and judges have also been arrested.
The investigation involving the arrested suspects is still ongoing, the anti-corruptions committee said in a statement on Friday.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the establishment of the National Anti-corruption Committee to spearhead his administration’s anti-corruption push on November 17, 2022.
A week into its launch, the committee received more than 250 tip-offs related to corruption and maladministration from the public.
Actionable tip-offs have been identified through simple and thorough screening, the Committee indicated.
Charges will be filed against the officials and associates arrested on suspicion of the crime.
The committee, which plans to give updates on its operations on a regular basis, encourages the public to continue the tip-off via the toll-free telephone line, 9555.
